In 1996, I bought a Sony Handycam because I was missing too many family gatherings while working 60-hour weeks. I thought I was just documenting events.

I had no idea I was racing against time.

Fast forward to today. My family wasn't big to begin with, but nine of the people in those early videos are gone. Where I once sat at the kids' table, only six of us remain.

All the aunts and uncles who taught me to laugh? Gone. The great and grandparents who held our history? Gone.

But I can still hear their voices. I can still watch them live. Those recordings became sacred when I realized what I'd accidentally preserved - not just events, but the souls of the people I loved most.
